This is not a majestic unicorn. This one has a lumpy nose, a mouthful of grass, big square teeth and a heavy-lidded eye that suggests you have interrupted something. It stands in tall green grass under a flat yellow sky with a small pale sun.

And it is beautifully painted — the body modelled in soft blues and whites, the horn built up in careful gold segments. That mix of real skill and complete silliness is exactly what my grandfather was like.

Dave Coleman spent his working life as a jazz drummer in Seattle and painted the entire time. This is the largest, most detailed work in his whole archive.
