An old bearded drummer in a flat cap, perched on a stool with a snare across his knee. Painted by a drummer who knew exactly how that feels. Archival 11×14 print.
An old man in a flat cap sits on a worn red stool with a snare drum across his knee, one stick raised, a gold cymbal and a battered bass drum beside him. The whole painting is worked in soft browns and greens, like a memory of a room rather than the room itself.
Dave Coleman painted this, and he was a drummer himself — the man hundreds of Seattle drummers came to study with. He knew exactly how a snare sits on a knee and how a player leans into a stool. That knowledge is why the posture is right.
If you play, or love someone who does, this one lands differently than a stock photograph of a drum kit ever could.
