B.B. Feathers stares straight out at you with two huge, perfectly round blue eyes, a wild mane of electric-blue feathers going every direction, and a soft yellow beak curving down the middle like a question mark. Underneath, two striped little legs. The black background is what makes it — every blue in the painting seems lit from behind.

Painted by hand in acrylic with loose, feathery strokes, B.B. joins my flock of whimsical birds, but this one is the graphic one: high contrast, big shapes, no fuss. He reads clearly from all the way across a room.

The tall 10 × 20 shape is the fun part. It fits the narrow spots most art can’t — beside a doorway, between two windows, up a stairwell, or in a hallway that needs something. Hang him alone, or line up several from the flock for a row of characters.
