A tree stands at the center of this painting, black and rooted, its branches reaching all the way to the edges. The canopy behind it burns — deep red, orange, coral — broken into rounded shapes that read as leaves at a distance and as hearts up close. A yellow sun flares in the top left, and around the edges the sky goes violet, teal and blue.
The background was built first, in a lot of layers, so there’s a real depth of color behind that silhouette — you can see traces of blue and green coming through the red where the earlier layers show. The tree went on last, in solid black, in one long session. It’s the only hard shape on the whole canvas and it holds everything together.
Trees have always been one of my subjects, and this is the warmest one I’ve painted. It’s a piece for a living room, a dining room, or over a fireplace where the color can do its work. In portrait orientation at 12×16 it’s substantial without being large, and it makes a meaningful gift — a wedding, an anniversary, a new home.
