Look at the upper left of this canvas and you’ll find a small black figure, arms raised, standing at the end of a long curving path. Everything else is weather and distance — magenta and violet washing across the middle, deep blue sweeping through in broad strokes, white clouds banked at the top, and a red form rising at the lower right like something on the horizon.

The figure is barely an inch tall and it was the last thing I painted. Everything before it was color — I worked the sky for a long time, letting the magenta and blue bleed into each other, before I knew what the painting needed. Then it was obvious: someone standing in all that space with their arms up.

I named it Longing, but people read it differently — some see wanting, some see arriving. Both are right. At 20×16 it’s the largest of the new work and it carries a wall on its own. It’s the piece I’d put somewhere you sit and think.
