Mr. Beaker is all personality. A deep red, shaggy-feathered bird looks out with one enormous brown eye, while his long, curved beak sweeps down and around like a question mark against a soft, misty teal-green background. Little striped legs peek out below.

Painted by hand in acrylic, this piece is part of my whimsical bird series, but at 16×20 he’s bigger and bolder than the rest of the flock — close enough to feel like he’s really looking at you. There’s a warmth and a little bit of mischief in that expression that people connect with right away.

He makes a strong statement piece for a living room, an office, a reading nook, or the centerpiece of a gallery wall alongside the smaller birds. A wonderful gift for anyone who loves art with real character.

Every bird in this series traces back to my grandfather, Dave Coleman — a Seattle jazz drummer who painted birds his whole life. Read the story →
