Along the bottom edge, a row of buildings rises in electric blue, each one dotted with tiny white windows. Above them the sky goes turquoise, then hot pink, then violet, and a big red-and-black striped circle sits in the top corner like a moon that got interesting. Off to the right, ribbons of blue and magenta trail away like something flying past.

I wasn’t painting any particular city. It started as a color study and the skyline appeared near the end, which is usually how the best ones go. The white towers in the middle were the last thing added, painted thick so they stand slightly proud of the sky behind them.

This has the feel of a night out — neon, movement, a little bit of noise. It suits a city apartment, a teen’s room, a creative studio, or anywhere that could use something playful. It also makes a good gift for someone who loves their city.
