A fiery red-and-orange bird with a bandit’s mask, wide startled eyes, and striped yellow legs, set against warm weathered brown. This original 10×20 acrylic is warm, funny, and full of attitude. One of a kind.
Freddy Red looks like he’s just been caught doing something. Two wide eyes sit inside a bold red-and-black mask, a long butter-yellow beak curves down his front, and his body is all fiery red and burnt orange feathers painted in quick vertical strokes. Skinny yellow legs, striped and curled at the feet, hold the whole thing up.
Painted by hand in acrylic against a warm, weathered brown ground, Freddy is the hottest-colored bird in the flock — all reds and oranges where the others go blue and teal. He’s the one people point at.
The tall 10 × 20 format makes him easy to place in spots most paintings can’t fill: a narrow entry wall, the gap beside a bookcase, a hallway, a stairwell. He also warms up a wall of cooler blue pieces beautifully.

Every bird in this series traces back to my grandfather, Dave Coleman — a Seattle jazz drummer who painted birds his whole life. Read the story →
