An orange ribbon curls through the middle of this painting in one continuous, looping line, thick enough that the paint stands up off the surface. Around it the canvas goes deep — forest green, wine red, midnight purple — and scattered through the dark are small dots of chartreuse that catch the light like they’re lit from behind.

The orange went on last, in one pass, wet and heavy. That’s why it has that raised, ropey quality. Everything underneath it was built up in layers over several sittings, which is where the depth comes from — there’s a lot of color buried in there that you only find when you get close.

Small paintings with this much warmth are useful. It brightens a dark corner, sits well against a moody wall color, and looks especially good near wood or brass. If you like art that feels alive rather than restful, this is that painting.
