Rodger wears a crown. Three golden curlicues spiral up from the top of his head like antennae, over a rounded copper-and-rust body and two enormous turquoise eyes that seem to be looking just past you. His long butter-yellow beak curls at the tip, and his legs are striped in gold and black.

Painted by hand in acrylic, Rodger is smoother and more polished than the loose, feathery birds in the flock — the color is blended soft, the shapes are clean, and that deep teal background makes the whole thing glow. He has a real storybook quality.

The tall 10 × 20 canvas fits the narrow walls other art can’t: beside a door, between two windows, in a stairwell, or over a narrow console. He’d be right at home in a nursery, a kid’s room, a reading nook, or a hallway that needs a little magic.

Questions before Rodger picks his spot? I’m just a message away.

Every bird in this series traces back to my grandfather, Dave Coleman — a Seattle jazz drummer who painted birds his whole life. Read the story →
