A dark form rises up the middle of this canvas and branches at the top, and around it two heavy scrolls curl outward in black and deep wine red. The ground behind is gold — real metallic paint, brushed on in broad leaf-shaped strokes — with rust, cream and small orange-centered targets running along the lower edge.

I didn’t set out to paint a tree, but that’s what appeared, and once it did the rest of the painting organized itself around it. The gold went down first as a full field, then everything else was layered over the top, so the metallic keeps showing through in the gaps.

This is the sibling to La Fan — same red, gold and black language, same warmth — and they hang beautifully as a pair. Alone, it’s a grounding piece for a room with wood, brass or warm neutrals. Something about the upward movement makes it a good painting to have where you start your day.
